Media is a powerful tool. There are different kinds of media which publics can get, whether it be public media, interactive, controlled or through an event then there is also one on one which which is used usually to relsolve underlying issues. Majority of media in australia such as the seven nine and ten networks are that of a controlled medium under this category comes also the print media such as all high profile news papers in australia are controlled buy one media giant. In saying this the issues brought forward in these mediums are heavily controlled and therefore the people do not get the complete story it is very on sided. In saying this media has the power to change the publics perception without the ability of challenging it.

Messages can change people view on a situation and how that message is sent out to the public can change peoples views also. Propaganda is a very large part of messages and even though i have mentioned it before in recent blogs i will raise it once more but slightly. The way a person puts out a message like Nazis did for jews how they said that the jews are holding germans back from attaining there goals can be seen as Persuasion but as a majority propaganda. In this case and at the economic state of the country at this period of time this can be seen as Mindless Persuasion as i see this as passive processing which was mentioned in this weeks lecture, as the publics decision was automatically triggered and there was almost no thought provided not to mention if you were against this you were an enemy of the state. The way messages are derived are to target certain publics and these cause multiple issues with publics or they can be percieved as the norm and no issues are brought forward

This week in theory and practise we have been talking about Publics and Public opinion. There are many factors to take into consideration when talking about publics and public opinions. Issues raised can be that of ethnicity, religious views, a publics view on the topic at hand and also thing such as how the public matches into the issue in focus. Ethnicity and religious views are a very large issue when dealling with publics as the words said in incorrect fashion can lead to issues such as racism. This can be the case when talking about issues such as immigration as there are many different kinds of racism. another large issue to be taken into account is that of male or female dominance, one recently brought to my attention is that of the violence against women Australia says no. In these adverts you have men admiting to violence but in the broader picture to someone could interpret the idea differently such as that all males in australia have issues with women and have at one stage or another hurt a woman. In this case there can be many issues raised as whether it targeted the correct publics or whether it generalised it too much. This is a great debate and i could go on for hours about it but i believe people should look into it and post there opinion on here.

Thank You

The Importance of Research

Research is a large factor in any organization as through research we have the ability to make the right decisions, focus on certain issues that can effect the organization negatively. Research is a very big tool for a public relations practitioner and is used to discover public’s views on a company, the strength and weaknesses of the organization in question and our competitors and also can be used to find out other major factors on the views in question. Through all the research that can be undertaken we can create Campaigns that can hit the target audience perfectly.

Research is our greatest tool and also if there wasn’t any research our industry would be pointless because without research there would be no information and then there would be nothing to release to the public.

What Is a Campaign? How does it effect Publics?

A campaign is a created by a company in order to help change or persuade public opinion but definitions tell us it is goals that will move a certain organization towards its current objectives which can effect the longer term objectives stated on its mission statement. Campaigns are undertaken by companies or governments to get there point of view across the one that sticks in my mind the most is the Anti Smoking campaigns which are everywhere at the moment and the campaigns have been going on for a while now and have successfully made people quit smoking.

Through awareness and opinion organizations have the ability to effect there public’s in many different ways and can cause major changes and also change public’s views on a company or organization in question.

Communication, It can be your best friend and worst enemy. In the field of public relations that’s how it can be interpreted.

Public relations plays a major part in any organization as the CEO’s of the organization are in constant contact with the public relations department. Practitioners also are to develop relationships with staff and spokespeople to create good public relations campaigns. With communication there can be alot of positive communication through the company and there can also be a lot of negative within or coming from the outside. some negative factors can include bad press and also misinterpretation.

Communication is a majority factor in our field and without it our profession would not exist. Communication can be the rise and downfall of a company from the inside or out as it can create good work ethic and also can create hostile workers.

Propaganda is a very powerful tool and has been used throughout the twentieth century. It is used through advertising but i guess the worst part of propaganda is that it has the ability to change peoples views on certain things. When mentioning propaganda i ultimately think of World War Two and also the Cold War as it was a large part in both of these wars with each oposing side releasing Adverts and Newspapers saying how each of there enemies are effecting them and whether or not you are going to be apart of the solution or are you the cause.

In my eyes Propaganda is a very powerful tool and in the field of Public Relations it may be the demise of the truth as you can see in the posters uploaded how it can cause a hate through millions of people.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af44Slin7lg Propaganda at its finest

There are multiple theories in Public Relations, Cybernetics and Boundary Spanning, Co Orientation and multiple communication theories. Today i will be focusing on the excellence theory.

The Excellence Theory came from a study carried out by Grunig, Grunig and Dozier. The study began as a way to show how Public Relations contributes to an Organisations effectiveness. The Key outcome of the excellence theory is that public relations is a “Unique Management function that helps an organisation interact with the social and political components of its environment”. (Grunig, Grunig & Dozier 2006:55)

The excellence theory also suggests that a company or organisation with excellent Public Relations has a symmetrical system of communication throughout the company, has a great work ethic through all of its employees and equal opportunities for men and women and also minorities including ethnics etc.

Since the development of the Excellenc theory there have been many reworks of the idea and the most recent include Grunig and Hunts Four Models

Public Relations seems to be an everchanging field.

Here are 10 Trends Changing the Field

1) Inbound Marketing

Inbound marketing refers to permission-based marketing strategies in which consumers choose to learn more about you by conducting a keyword search online, subscribing to your RSS feed, downloading your white paper, opting into your email newsletter, watching your videos, listening to your podcasts, visiting your social network or commenting on your blog.

2) Content Marketing

Inbound marketing is powered by content. In order to grow smarter and faster than the competition, organizations must continually publish multi-media content online through blogs, podcasts, videos, optimized press releases, case studies, white papers, eBooks and by-lined articles.

Content marketing, which requires expert copywriting and strategic planning, is the single largest growth opportunity for PR agencies. Learn more about the impact of content marketing in our post, “How PR Firms Can Rule the Marketing World.”

3) Social Web (aka Web 2.0) & The Decline of Mainstream Media

The social Web of consumer-generated content and mass collaboration (i.e. blogging, micro-blogging, forums, social networks, photo and video sharing, social bookmarking) is no longer a trend. Rather, it is an integral and powerful part of our lives.

However, as mainstream media’s (MSM) ability to reach and influence publics declines, demand for social Web strategy, consultation and services will explode.

4) Search

Through content marketing and the social Web, organizations have the ability to reach and influence consumers directly at the exact moment they are searching for products, services and knowledge.

In essence, they are granting you permission to market to them, but you have to be there. This is accomplished through content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO), which will become a core competency of inbound marketing agencies.

5) Measurement

Advertising equivalency and media impressions have long been the PR industry’s means of measuring success. And while these numbers tend to satisfy the C-Suite, what really matters are search engine rankings, inbound links, Website traffic, leads and sales. These highly trackable metrics are how firms should, and will, be judged.

6) Web Software Solutions

New online software (mostly developed by companies outside the PR industry) has made it possible for firms to dramatically expand their services (e.g. monitoring, measurement, SEO, content distribution, Website development, pay-per-click advertising), and in turn provide more measurable value to clients.

7) Next Generation Leaders

The next generation of PR industry leaders and influencers, who are already emerging, will come from Generation X (ages 28-43) and Generation Y (ages 18-27). They will be extremely tech-savvy, fully immersed in the social Web, highly tolerant to risk and motivated to separate themselves from traditional wisdom and conventional solutions.

Data from Forrester Research Technographics® surveys, 2008.

For further details on the Social Technographics profile, see groundswell.forrester.com.

 Value-Based Pricing

Traditional retainers and high hourly rates are too restrictive for the mass market, and once organizations (small and large) realize there is an alternative, demand will skyrocket for firms that deliver value-based pricing.

9) Mobile

I don’t pretend to comprehend the full impact of mobile marketing on our industry and business at large, but the geniuses at Google do, and they recently wrote about it on their blog post: The future of mobile

And, just as I’m getting ready to publish this post, I see this article from PRWeek: Omnicom opens mobile-focused firm in New York.

10) Website Development

Website development must be driven by buyer personas, visitor behavior, content marketing strategies and SEO.

Inbound marketing agencies will become the preferred providers for Web development services, with the technical design and programming still delivered by the experts (possibly outsourced, or brought in-house).\

http://www.pr2020.com/page/10-public-relations-trends-that-will-change-the-industry-forever

The one that i would be able to relate to most would be Number Three the change of social web and decline of mainstream. These days there has been a large decline in main stream media as print media has slowly declined and so have other forms. Throught the usage of Web 2.0 and building websites there has been more attention through that then through advertising in local papers. Chuckies has boomed since the launch of its website and that just goes to show that there have been multiple changes in the World and in the World of Public Relations, the way we present ourselves has changed and the way we get our points across have also changed. So in this everchanging course i guess its up to us to keep up.

Hello All

This Weeks PR lecture Left me questioning which field i would like to enter once more. I have completed this course once before but still am unsure in which direction i am hoping to go. Thoughout the last year i have worked at multiple companies such as Chuckies Home Maintenance and C & S Sporting Arms and in working here i guess i really have used some tools picked up in this course.

Public relations is defined as “The deliberate, planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics”. (Public Relations Institute of Australia). In mentioning this definition i have really began to understand what it means with a bit of hands on experience. While working at C&S i have had to deal with many different kinds of Publics such as Customers, Dealers, Government officials and also Suppliers and in mentioning these publics we have to stay on the correct side of all of these and any indiscrepincies must be delt with quickly and with the correct manner. The same applies to Chuckies home maintenance as i must look after all aspects of the business though advertising and also the Website i must also help out customers and help the owner make desicions including where to advertise, what companies we should use as suppliers ETC. I can see now how Public Relations and Human Resources are a very close linked in there work.

Thank you
